Let me tell you a tale...

Once upon a time there was a Queen who was longing to be free. But she was contained within the pages of a book—until I brought her out. I've loved Alice in Wonderland for as long as I can remember, so when it came time to pick out my latest cosplay it was a bit of a no-brainer. A funny fact about this cosplay is that it's actually been in production since March 2018...in my mind. Throughout the past year I've been piecing together materials, props and different pieces that could come together to create my Queen of hearts.

Although the sketch was entirely organic, it was about two months ago that I realized what vibe I wanted to channel in order to make my cosplay: Beyoncé.

Once I found my muse, the rest of this cosplay really started to fall together. And by fall together I mean that's when the real work began. Having a pile of materials with no clear design to follow meant taking experimentation to a different level than I previously have. I wanted to make as much of my cosplay as possible, but I also wanted to keep costs down since I'm part of the #cosplayfor100 movement. That means when I cosplay I try to stay as close to $100 as possible. You can find out more about $100 cosplaying HERE.

One of the best parts of this cosplay was deciding how to accessorize. Since my past cosplays have been gender bent, I went with minimal accessories, but with this outfit I was outfitting a queen...and should look the part. My absolute favorite part of this outfit was the feather necklace which I made by taking an old metal necklace from a thrift store and the parts of a $2 mardi gras mask that I pulled apart after finding at a thrift shop as well.

This cosplay was created for a competition at Geek Girl Con which is a smaller convention held in Seattle, WA. Last year was the first year I'd ever competed in any kind of cosplay competition so I was thrilled to take home a category win. For next year I'm hoping to go all the way and take home the best in show. I can't wait!
